Here is a list of words I found interesting while reading “Go Set A Watchman” by Harper Lee.

  • quibble — to argue about, or say you disapprove of, something that is not important. There’s no point quibbling about/over a couple of dollars.
  • repent — to be very sorry for something bad you have done in the past and wish that you had not done it. He repented (of his sins) just hours before he died.
  • to go stark raving mad — to become completely insane. That noise is going to drive me stark raving mad.
  • incisive — expressing an idea or opinion clearly and in a persuasive manner. The guide’s incisive comments give us a new perspective on the painting.
  • to pep sm/smth up — to make someone or something more energetic or interesting. A good night’s sleep will pep you up.
  • to gobble up — to use a lot of your supply of something, usually money. The mounting legal costs quickly gobbled up their savings.
